Exploring Kerala: A Journey Through God's Own Country
Welcome to my travel blog, where I take you through the lush green landscapes, serene backwaters, and vibrant culture of Kerala, often called "God's Own Country". This tropical paradise in South India is a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and relaxation.
Day 1: Arrival in Kochi – The Gateway to Kerala
My journey began in Kochi (Cochin), a historic port city with a mix of colonial charm and modern vibes.
Highlights:
- Fort Kochi: Walked through the charming streets, visited the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets, and explored St. Francis Church (where Vasco da Gama was originally buried).
- Mattancherry Palace & Jew Town: Admired the beautiful murals and learned about Kerala’s royal history. The spice markets here were aromatic and vibrant!
- Kathakali Performance: Ended the day with a traditional Kathakali dance show—a mesmerizing experience of expressive storytelling.
Day 2: Munnar – The Tea Paradise
A scenic 4-hour drive from Kochi took me to Munnar, a hill station famous for its tea plantations, misty valleys, and cool climate.
Highlights:
- Eravikulam National Park: Spotted the endangered Nilgiri Tahr and enjoyed breathtaking views of rolling hills.
- Tea Museum: Learned about tea processing at the Tata Tea Museum and sipped on fresh tea.
- Mattupetty Dam & Echo Point: Enjoyed a boat ride and shouted out to hear my voice echo across the hills!
Day 3: Thekkady – Into the Wild
Next stop: Thekkady, home to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Highlights:
- Periyar Lake Boat Safari: Spotted elephants, bison, and maybe even a tiger if lucky!
- Spice Plantation Tour: Discovered how cardamom, pepper, and vanilla are grown.
- Kalarippayattu Show: Watched Kerala’s ancient martial art form—thrilling and energetic!
Day 4-5: Alleppey – Backwater Bliss
No trip to Kerala is complete without experiencing the Alleppey (Alappuzha) backwaters. I stayed overnight on a traditional houseboat (kettuvallam).
Highlights:
- Houseboat Cruise: Glided through palm-fringed canals, watching village life go by.
- Vembanad Lake: Enjoyed a beautiful sunset over the water while eating delicious Kerala seafood.
- Village Walk: Interacted with locals, tried toddy (local palm wine), and saw coir-making.
Day 6: Kovalam & Varkala – Beach Therapy
Ended my trip with relaxation at Kerala’s best beaches.
Highlights:
- Kovalam Beach: Lounged at Lighthouse Beach, tried Ayurvedic massages.
- Varkala Cliff Beach: Stunning views, hippie vibes, and fresh seafood shacks. Perfect for unwinding!
Final Thoughts
Kerala is pure magic—whether you love nature, culture, or just chilling, it has something for everyone. The food (don’t miss sadya, appam with stew, and karimeen pollichathu) was unforgettable too!
